THE DEPARTMENT

The Department for the Environment, Global Change and Sustainable Development (ACS) has been carrying out for more than 40 years extensively multidisciplinary research on the main environmental and energetic-environmental themes, implementing innovative technologies and methodologies and supporting the national Authorities in the implementation of environmental and energetic legislations as well as the industrial sector; this is carried out in a sustainable development perspective, having in mind the interactions between the environment, the territory and the industrial systems, including the energetic one.
 
The main strategic areas of the Department, listed below, are based on the environmental priorities set by the European Union and the Italian national Agenda.

They are synthetically:

• to develop and use innovative methodologies, methods and numerical models to describe the environment and to evaluate possible future environmental and energetic-environmental scenarios;
• to design and realise innovative technological systems, such as prototypes, even in a pre-industrial size, instruments, devices, networks to monitor the environment, for the characterization of the territory and for the reduction and/or control of the air and liquid emissions;
• to propose to the industrial sectors - particularly SMEs - technological solutions and innovative methods while facing environmental and energetic-environmental issues and problems;
• to provide scientific and technical support to the central and local Public Authorities to implement national integrated strategies, to perform ex-ante and ex-post evaluation of the efficiency of the environmental and energetic actions plans put in place, to support them in the participation at the activities of EU and other international working groups and expert panels;
• to develop and promote appropriate information and governance tools, as a support to the Public Authorities.

The Department has 450 permanent staff (researchers, technicians and administrative staff) and approximately 50 non-permanent staff (scholarship holders, young researchers, Italian and foreign students), working in several ENEA Research Centre all over Italy.

The Department has consolidated co-operations with scientific research public and private Institutions as well as the industrial sector, both at national and international levels, and is strongly increasing its participation to research, technological, training and dissemination projects funded by the European Union.
Main EU programmes of interest for the Department are the Research Framework Programmes (FP5, FP6, FP7), LIFE+, INTERREG.
