The Department for the Environment, Global Change and Sustainable Development (ACS) has been carrying out for more than 40 years extensively multidisciplinary research on the main environmental and energetic-environmental themes, implementing innovative technologies and methodologies and supporting the national Authorities in the implementation of environmental and energetic legislations as well as the industrial sector; this is carried out in a sustainable development perspective, having in mind the interactions between the environment, the territory and the industrial systems, including the energetic one.
The main strategic areas of the Department, listed below, are based on the environmental priorities set by the European Union and the Italian national Agenda.

The Department has 450 permanent staff (researchers, technicians and administrative staff) and approximately 50 non-permanent staff (scholarship holders, young researchers, Italian and foreign students), working in several ENEA Research Centre all over Italy.
The Department has consolidated co-operations with scientific research public and private Institutions as well as the industrial sector, both at national and international levels, and is strongly increasing its participation to research, technological, training and dissemination projects funded by the European Union.
Main EU programmes of interest for the Department are the Research Framework Programmes (FP5, FP6, FP7), LIFE+, INTERREG.
